Back of knee pain!

So this JUST happened at the gym. I usually do 3 full body work outs per week. Coupled with plenty of running. Mind you... Running is done on the treadmill only.

I used to be a runner when I was younger. A lot of distance running. I wanted to do a marathon. This was like 8 years ago. I've always had bad knees. But 8 years ago, all I did was run outside. Maybe some treadmill in the winter months. My knees got so bad that they would lock up and I wouldn't even be able to walk. I went to the joint doctor (the same one my dad goes to for his knees), and he couldn't find anything wrong. All he said was that I should get some good insoles and lay off running outside because of the impact. A few months after that I eventually just gave up running all together.

Fast forward to like 8 months ago, I gradually began running again. Just on the treadmill because I'm afraid of the impact on my knees. No problems whatsoever. Today, I was going to do a full body workout at the gym. My calves (why does that word look like it's spelled wrong?) were sore so I was trying to stretch them out. All of the sudden I felt popping behind my right knee. It's painful enough to make me walk with a limp. Needless to say, I didn't do any lower body exercises today.

Back when my knees were bothering me 8 years ago... It was always the joints and never behind my knee. So I don't know if it's related. Something like this has never happened to me and I don't know if it's the running or not.

Has anyone had this happen? Any suggestions on what to do? I want to go to the doctor if it keeps bothering me... But I have to figure out my insurance now. I no longer have insurance and have to go through Obamacare to get it now.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I've had many a knee problem, but this is something I've never experienced. I'd say lay off the exercise a few days, do plenty of icing, and baby the knee a bit. Hopefully you just over-extended something and it will be back to normal in a few days.

Are you doing a good job of warming up and cooling down? Is the pain constant or when you move? Is it still hurting two days after the incident?

Yeah I'm hoping it's just over extended! We'll see!

I thought I was doing a good job warming up and cooling down. I may need to do a little more. When I do running, I walk at a brisk pace to the gym (it's 1/2 a mile from my apartment) and just walk another minute on the treadmill before I start running. Maybe I should add some additional walking before running? Afterwards, I usually walk about 5 minutes on the treadmill and then stretch. Then I walk the 1/2 mile home.

Oh yeah... And the pain is mainly when I move. Not really if I'm just keeping still. It just happened this morning so we'll see if it still hurts in a few days.

It might be a slight strain of the a ligament or tendon. Rest it. If it is still bothering you in a day or two, I’d go see a sports doctor.

It can be many things. Aside from warm-up, what do you do for flexibility? What do you do to strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, calves, low back, upper back, obliques, and ab's?

It can be a flexibility issue that could be one of either landing with your foot landing a little flat footed or perhaps you have some internal knee rotation either in your running or lifting. It's hard to really say without seeing you move so I can only speculate a little based on what you're saying.
