how come when you choose "strength training" instead of "cardio" your exercise diary doesn't show the calories you burnt doing it?

Probably because it is harder to calculate the calories burned from weight lifting. Cardio is usually done with your heartrate elevated at a steady state or up/down in intervals (HIIT). If you know your weight and average heartrate you can attach a calorie value to it. Weight lifting is a lot of sitting around and resting and the actual activity takes like 30 seconds. Your heartrate goes up while you're lifting but doesn't stay up for very long.0

I think there are just too many variables for them to make anywhere near an accurate figure. there is an option in cardio for 'strength training' or it may be 'weights' or similar, I can't quite remember. I'm told it's not very accurate.0

Say your lifting a weight that you can only do like 12 reps before failure and you do like 5 sets of 10 reps. Would you burn much more than if you just sat there instead?0 -

As others have noted, it can be hard to judge. That said, if the OP wants: log it as cardio instead.
That said, some use the calories burned doing weights as their "cushion" for errors in logging.

I read it on here regularly from weight lifters, who eat back their exercise calories. How do they know how many calories to eat back if they don't know how many they've burned??0 -
There's an option in the cardio pull down menus for strength training or circuit training. I have no idea how accurate the calorie burn is.0

They don't. That's why gyms are filled with soft, puffy dudes - so many of them are slamming "recovery calories" between 30 second bursts of lifting and going *way* over maintenance because they're "bulking".

Well that's not what I asked. I asked do you burn much more. Ofcoarse you burn more but how much more.
For example say you burned 100 cal just sitting there and 150 lifting weights. That's not much more, but if you burned 300 cal lifting then that is much more and worth recording.
I don't know how much you burn lifting, like people have said its hard to calculate, many variables.
For me I seem to spend some time resting between sets. I do the 8-15 reps of what ever and then rest for 30 secs.

Yeah I have been confused by this too.
Maybe they work out regular, week in week out so they just up their food slowly till they reach maintenance.

Are they bulking or cutting. Some people who lift do cardio too.

All I asked was do you burn much more calories lifting than sitting still.
If it is not much more then I would suggest not worrying about recording the exercise. Just treat it as a little bonus to your weight loss.
But if you do burn a lot of calories lifting compared to sitting then it might be a good idea to record it in the cardio section and find an estimate that seems accurate. That way you can eat back some of the calories burned etc.

I looked over my posts, all I am seeing is a question asked, the question re asked with more detail and examples.
And a question from you about a suggestion I made but can't see.
As far as I can see we are saying the same things.
Strength calorie burned is hard to calculate.
Some log it, some don't and use it as a buffer for errors or as a little bonus.

I would think that calculating calories from lifting weights would be fairly straightforward (for an individual though impossible to generalize across a population).
Work=M(g) x d... figure out how much mass you moved and how far you moved it, multiply by reps and you've got your Work calculated - then you just need to determine how much energy (in kilocalories, joules, watts, horsepower - whatever unit floats your boat) was required to do that work.
But that would take forever, especially as you changed variables (weights, reps, etc.) - and the results likely aren't significant enough to be worth it - better to just use those calories as a cushion.0 -
all of what said above. when (and if) i even log it, I'll enter it as the duration but only 1 calorie. but, i only log it MAYBE half the time lol0
