No peanuts, peaches or strawberries when dieting?

A pdf "Kickstart your metabolism" that came with Jillian Michaels' Body Revolution says:

"These foods should NEVER be included as part of your weight loss:
Soy, peanuts, raw cruciferous vegetables, peaches, strawberries, flax."

It says "The above foods may have Goitrogenic effects. Goitrogens are substances that suppress the function of the thyroid gland by interfering with iodine uptake, which can, as a result, cause an enlargement of the thyroid."

I'd feel a little silly avoiding strawberries, to be honest. Has anyone heard about this stuff before? Is it true (and important)?

Yeah... I eat something on that list everyday. Sometimes twice. And once my peach teach ripens probably more.

I can BS on anything that says you should NEVER eat this or that.

I have eaten over 200 grams of strawberries every single day since I've been dieting and it never stopped me from losing two pounds a week.

Sounds like our Jillian spends too much time on Wikipedia. Food that have a Goitrogenic effect are only a problem if you already have thyroid function problems. As round about 4 % of the population have thyroid problems of some sort and only a small percentage of this would actually have any significant effect from goitrogenic foods in reality most people do not need to worry. It's another case of a 'fitness expert' hearing some small piece of medical information then not researching it properly and being it all out of proportion.

jillian has a wicked hypo thyroid, and too much of those foods can interfere with thyroid meds and keep them from working. which sucks, because i love me some broccoli and peaches, but if i overdo it, it WILL interfere with the effectiveness of synthroid.

for normal people, there's probably no reason to worry, but if you have a borderline/sluggish/iffy thyroid, those foods can make things worse. it's just in the chemical makeup of the food. we're talking like, pounds of raw broccoli before someone without a thyroid issue would see effects, but there's no point in pissing your body off if you know you have a thyroid problem, and it might help avoid pissing your body off if you SUSPECT you have one. her statements are accurate, if not overly cautionary.

I've had soy pretty much every day of my life-have an asian family. Soy milk, miso soup, soybean sprouts, you name it.
I'm a strawberry fiend-can put down a pound no problem. I put flaxseed and flax oil in my smoothie every single day. Did it stop me from losing weight (and then some?) Nope.

Unless you have a legitimate thyroid issue, these foods will not hamper your weight loss.

Now, strawberry short cake, Peanut butter cups, and broccoli with bounds of cheese might, but that's another story ;)

well, don't go on a "diet" and just eat what you want within your caloric goals.

why would you not eat something, especially strawberries, they are low sugar, low cal low fricken everything. and have some of that nutrition stuff in them.

eat what you want to eat.

exclusion is for people who "diet"

Thanks for the explanations (and opinions), guys.
I don't think anything could keep me from eating broccoli and strawberries anyway, to be honest. Especially broccoli, my best bud :3

Your thyroid needs iodine. Not the garbage in most iodized table salt. Raw seaweed like kelp, wakame, or nori is great.

I had never thought of cutting out goitrogenic foods. I do eat quite a lot of the foods you mentioned, and I'm at risk of hypothyroidism. It might be something to think about in certain cases. I cook most of the vegetables - perhaps there is more of a risk for people who are juicing and eating a lot of raw.
