heart monitor

I don't have any blood pressure issues, want to get one to help track my calories burned and for accuracy. The sensors on the machines are a pain in the neck, and I'm not going to deal with it at all on the treadmill.
Is there one that will work with the machines that isn't like, $200 and also reliable. Do you have to have the Polar ones to use it with the machine and get an accurate reading?
Suggestions is good

There are many HR monitors on the market, as to which one to buy will depend on WHICH machines you plan to use it with, and what activities you plan.
There are also HR monitors that will play with both your phone as well as the gym equipment eg. Runtastic combo0
