Contrary to popular belief and fitness industry marketing claims, your body weight and composition is not largely determined by your level of physical activity. According to a 2013 article on the role of activity in obesity risk in the International Journal of Epidemiology, “…energy expenditure in activity appears to be playing no role in either causing or moderating the obesity epidemic…” Instead, they claim, the problem had more to do with a reduction in both the cost of and the time required to obtain and/or prepare food. In other words people don’t get fat because they’re inactive or lazy, they get fat because they eat too much.
Energy expenditure in the gym is also extremely over estimated. The cardio equipment at most gyms provide you with the amount of calories you burned in the workout on the display. What is not calculated into this reading is your BMR. For example, your body burns a certain amount of calories per hour regardless of activity. Say your BMR is 60 cals bet hour; you climb on your cardio equipment and burn 150 calories. After deducting what you would have already burned without exercise, you only burned 90 excess calories. Now you go and grab your favorite well deserved iced coffee after the workout and your in the hole 150 calories; making your workout useless.
At the end of the day, it's about limiting your caloric intake. You cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet!

Although I do think it's a combination of both. Not necessarily "exercise" but just activity levels have decreased. That combined with how easy/cheap it is to eat 2000 calories in about 5 minutes from your local convenience store is the issue.0
