I am an absolute newbie at exercise.

I have lost 70lb so far and have another 30lb to go. I'm 58 and my knees and already have both been damaged by carrying so much weight.

I have recently bought a fitbit and have increased my activity hugely but I would like to be able to run. I have been running a few yards on occasions (when no one else is around).

Today I had a go at running from one lamppost to another a few times but when I got back my feet and ankles were aching quite a bit.

I have no idea if it is because I need different shoes. I wear orthotics. Perhaps I overdid it?

What would you advise, please?

What has your exercise been so far while losing 70 lbs (congrats, by the way!!!)? If you've already been walking, then you're off to a good start. You can add small bursts of running (at a very slow, conservative speed) for 20-30 seconds at a time and increase (see Couch to 5k plan).

You said your feet and ankles were aching. Was it pain or ache? If it was just an ache, that's fairly normal as you're making them do something they normally don't. If you already have decent walking shoes, I wouldn't worry about it. If you haven't been fitted for proper shoes for walking (or running), be sure to do so if you are serious about starting running.

Thank you. I think it is aching rather than pain, and only when I walk.

I have lost the weight only by dieting -exercise has always been a no-no.

I wear trainers for walking, but they are just every day trainers.
