Hi! I just bought my first smartphone and joined this on a friend's recommendation. Keeping track of the caloric intake and output looks like a really good tool, though I am very much a novice at this.
I am 53, 5'7", 162 lbs (as of this morning) and would like to lose 10-15 pounds. for no other reason than to fit into more of my clothes without having to buy new ones.
Right now, I am learning to use the myfitnesspal Android app (as well as my smartphone in general). I realize that my "counts" are not perfect, but data entry still keeps me focused. Even my wife and kids think this is a cool tool.
