Quick story recap. RNY 01/26/15, expected to lose about 2lbs per week as it is a revision surgery and the Doc said about 2lbs is average for revision patients. I have a bulging L5 and a weak right knee. Hurts to do steps, but I still do them when I can. I'm trying to create a program for me that works for my lifestyle. I'd like to improve cardiovascular endurance as well as tone. I've read the walking thread and believe I could do well with walking, I'm looking forward to getting back in Zumba hopefully this week. I have 1/2/3/6/10 lb weights at home. Are they good to start a resistance program with? Can anyone point me in the direction of good books/videos for resistance training? Thanks in advance!!

Mark Lauren's You Are Your Own Gym and Body By You (aimed specifically at women) are popular guides to bodyweight strength exercises that can be done with minimal equipment. They're worth a look; this video offers a preview:

Most exercises have modifications that will allow you to make them easier or harder. Depending on the exact nature of your weak knee, strengthening the muscles around it might help deal with the pain when you are climbing stairs.

Walking is great cardio exercise, and you can make it somewhat more intense by walking faster. If you have access to a pool, swimming and water aerobics are other good, low-impact exercises. Cycling or spinning is also worth considering; a properly fitted bike (outdoors or stationary) allows you to get a good workout with fairly low impact. But it's fine to start with walking, and Zumba if you find it suits you well.

    Good luck!
