Way to go!! And so awesome that you are doing this for her!! I wanted to ask my mom to do the same thing for me on my birthday, but hubby talked me out of it. I think it's fantastic.

Your daughter is a smart girl, mfp is a great tool for health and weight loss. Get a food scale, weigh and log everything, and read the posts stickied at the tops of the various forums. Good luck!!

No, it really isn't! I'm down 37 pounds in half a year, hypothyroid, 40's, and never thought I could do it. It's important to learn as you go though.

Key things: CICO (calories in, calories out), weigh your food, no cheats that would put you above maintenance. Do some weight training to preserve muscle mass as you lose. Diet to lose weight exercise for fitness and health.

<< has lost and kept 70 pounds off.

it's not impossible. it's just not going to happen overnight. just take it one day at a time. :)
  • You got this bud. 30 days will be over in the blink of an eye. I'd wish you luck but you won't need it. Discipline is the key.

The trick is to want it more. You have to want it more than the unhealthy foods. Find a way to modify them. Substitute in plain Greek yogurt for sour cream you can barely tell the difference. Cut back on the servings of high calorie starches like rice mashed potatoes etc. and eat more lower calorie lean proteins that will keep you full longer. You can still eat some of the bad stuff just need to eat smaller portions and make it fit. I still have the occasional sundae from Dairy Queen.

Well, some would argue that point :) but I love it here. Just don't ask silly questions like if fad diets work :*

You need to find a way to want it as much as she wants it for you. Think about what her life would be like without you. Think about all the things you could miss. It Has to come from within you

Welcome, and best of luck to you. Just get used to logging everything for a few days, then review your food choices for ideas how you might improve.

Are you going to do a daily exercise like treadmill or walking as well?

Oh, and as this is set up as a thirty day challenge, might I suggest you diarize your discoveries, and any successes along the way? Just so in thirty days you will recognize the changes.

If you are tempted to break the challenge, simply write it down in your diary, or take a picture of it. Something to look forward on a "cheat" day after the thirty days are over. I was on a medically supervised liquid diet for two weeks and I tell you, there were days....so I made a list of the foods I would enjoy when it was all over.

You might just decide on day 31 you don't really need it.

She made me a workout calender, made it start slow and increase over time. Just getting me active. Then into weights and cardio, just a little at a time, but increasing. This use this website to track a diet plan and cal in tracking. Having me increase protein and lower fat. Only usr healthy fats

that's a great daughter you got there, and you're an awesome Dad for going along and giving her this. She's looking out for you! :)
I started at 308.6 October 1st last year and am now at 261. So almost 50 lbs gone. It's do-able. Do it at your own pace, don't skimp on too many calories, eat what you're given, move a little extra here and there and you'll see it come right off! Also, eat some of your favorites from time to time, just be honest when you log them!
Otherwise, good luck and it's not a race to the 220!
  • Wow.....what a truly inspirational post.....your daughter has done an amazing thing and I'm positive you will do it. She obviously loves you lots ...... here's to yr journey and a healthier slimmer you

I can see that. I always jump in, and go hard. Then back off and fail because of starvation. But if i take it slow, and eat the amount to loose weight slowly. I might finish this one. I always go to starvation mode after a week or do. When i do Akins diet. I get to much fat, and don't loose alot.

Thanks everyone for the inspiration. I'm definitely doing this for a while. Not sure if i can hit 220 lbs. That might be like starving myself. But if you go slow and over time (like a year ) it might work.

I'm glad you are trying for your daughter's sake. You don't have to accept that you are "a big guy" unless you want to stay that guy. I've lost 80lbs and have 20 more to go. Counting calories and keeping up with what you eat may seem like a lot of work and time, but the people above me are right - if YOU want to make the change, and want the result, then you do make the time. It is all about what is important to you, and YOU have to be ready to do it. I've been at the place where the taste of the food and convenience was more important to me than the health or my figure, but once I decided that I did not want to be the big girl, I started keeping a food diary and doing the math and it worked. Good luck!

Awwwww, that's daughter-love. You're her pet project! Sweet of you to go along. I would have loved to do that for my dad but he's darned independent. He recognized years ago he had to make a change and he did it all on his own. Before I did.

What would you do when you get to 220 lbs? Is there something you really want in life that you can't do while you're "the big guy"?

I've found that it helps to have a little bit of extra motivation. For me it's a 5 day backpacking trip. It's something I'd absolutely love to do, but I'm not in good enough shape yet. I'm hoping by the end of the summer though... And I have little mini-rewards along the way too. My next 4 lbs loss I'll be signing up for a 5k race, and 2 lbs after that it's a new spring jacket. My current jacket is 7 years old, and it still "works" so I can't really justify it on it's own, but if I got to 174 lbs, then I WILL get it, and I'll look darn awesome in it too.

Just keep trying, be realistic, and you'll see that all those little healthy choices will add up.

I think these threads here are also awesome for motivation:
