It's a given in our household, that my wife will generally handle cooking the meat protein for supper, but I am left to handle my own side dishes which I keep fairly simple and straight forward. So being from Louisiana, I grew up on beans and rice in various forms. So my go to side dish I have most nights is:
Brown Rice bowl from Uncle Ben's (45 sec in microwave)
Simple Truth Tri-Bean Blend (70 sec in microwave for 1 cup)
Tony Chachere's Creole Sandwich Sauce (1Tbs...sounds weird, but awesome...kinda like a spicy mayo)
Salt, pepper, hot sauce to taste
Literally takes 2-3 minutes and you can substitute if you have a more preferable bean choice as I do black beans or red beans sometimes to change it up some.0 -

We love turning brown rice into Spanish rice....it's good with or without meat:
sautee as many vegetables as you want (small dice): I use onions, peppers, carrots, tomatoes
brown ground turkey in same pan
Add brown rice and liquid (I prefer 1/2 chicken stock and 1/2 salsa for the liquid)
bring to a simmer and cook according to rice directions (we use minute brown rice so it's quick)
Add can of black beans and mix in
serve with whatever you want....shredded cheese, sour cream, salsa, tortilla chips.
This has been a very popular one dish meal in our house!0 -
Broccoli-and-rice
All you need for this is onions, cheddar cheese, milk, broccoli, and the rice.
I just cut up some onions, and then mix that in with the rice. If I'm doing about 1 cup of cooked rice, I'll add about 1-2 ounces of cheese and ~3 tablespoons of milk. This dish can be done with both frozen and fresh broccoli. But if using frozen broccoli, I thaw it some in the microwave to remove some of the water. I'll add about 3-5 ounces of broccoli. Then I bake this for about 30-35 minutes somewhere around 375°.0 -
I like to mix in some salsa. Quick, lots of flavor without too many added calories.0

Ignorant question here but... do you believe white rice is better for you diesel?0 -
Better in what sense? Almost identical macro and micro nutrient values, if you view the context of eating brown or white rice only. In the context of a balanced diet, no food is good or bad. Comes down to which one you prefer. If you have to add things to brown rice, or any food for that matter to make it tolerable, why eat it?
Both taste great alone in my book, but I prefer white rice..0 -
Brown rice is excellent in stuffed bell peppers and cabbage rolls...0

Alton Brown's oven method for making brown rice is WONDERFUL for us lazy, inattentive types. Put in dish, ignore for an hour. No boiling over or boiling dry. Perfect brown rice every time. You can then doctor it up with whatever you want. I often adjust the recipe by doing part brown/part wild rice. Just google 'alton brown oven rice' and you'll find the original instructions. I never boil brown rice anymore.0
