Intermittent Fasting

I see quite a few people going on and on about it on Tumblr, has anyone tried it? Do you think it could work?

You and I look at WAY different things on Tumblr apparently.

your going to find a bunch of people who do fasting, and a whole bunch of people who don't do fasting and just eat at a reasonable deficit. Personally, I choose not to bother with fasting.

I am half-way doing it, but know a lot of friends and people on here who are getting awesome results. Def would try it.

This. I fast by not eating breakfast most days. Given that meal timing doesn't matter though, I tend to use IF simply because I'm not hungry in the mornings anyway, it allows me to eat more at night, and I like the feeling of an empty stomach when I run. It works for me most days.

I like it. I try and stick with 14/10 but sometimes end up with 16/8. I've been at it a couple months. I find myself highly energetic during fasts. I do both fasted and non-fasted workouts both with good results in strength gains. I got into Leangains because I love weightlifting and wanted to try and see what kind of results I'd get through it. Still in the process of finding out. Strength is currently my best measure of success right now. I have yet to experience a dent in fat loss.

I've been doing JUDDD for 2 weeks now and have lost 2.6 lbs thus far. Before I started JUDDD, I was lucky to lose .5 lbs/week. So I'm definitely excited to see how much I can lose with JUDDD

I tried it. It just really didn't work for me and I am gaining in weight room and losing my gut at the same rate by dieting "normally" (What is normal, anyway?)

If you're curious, start reasonably and give it a couple of weeks. A lot of people love it.

I'm doing it, but it's not the miracle plan some people would have you believe. In order for it to work, you still have to manage your calories, have reasonable macros, and kick *kitten* during your workouts. If you're not doing those things, it doesn't much matter what you do - you won't see any significant results.

If you are doing those things, than IFing can be great. However, most other approaches can be great too. IMO, pick a plan that encourages long term sustainability. Or in other words, something that will work for you. IFing is one good option. So is the 6 meals a day approach.
  • I've done (and do) it. It's has been a major contributing factor to my weight loss thus far. Not only do I feel more energized but it also gives me a nice little kickstart when I hit a plateau.

It's a tool of convenience rather than a tool of efficacy. Assuming your nutrient intake is exactly the same, and you're not only eating one meal a day, the results you reap will be the same. People just don't like to eat breakfast.

    this.

people who have better luck with IF than with other approaches because IF makes it easier for them to stay within their cals. if you're hitting your cals and macros, anything will work.

I lost all my weight doing JUDDD ie alternate day intermittent fasting :) Now I'm in maintenance and do 8:16 IF. I'll always do some form of IF!

Yes. I fast for 12-16 hrs. I eat 2 meals a day. One @ 1:30 pm and another at 5:30pm

I do IF mostly because I get to eat huge meals at night and still lose weight. But it's also nice to not have to worry about food several times a day.

Research suggests that fasting can help regulate certain hormones that aid in fat loss, and there are other health benefits that are believed to result from it, too. But as some others have said, it's not a magic bullet. You still have to be eating at a deficit if you want to lose weight.

It depends what version of IF you do-JUDDD and 5:2 both have calorie restriction components built into their plans. Eating window IF plans are the ones that do not restrict calories and instead focus on the times that you eat :)

All version of IF are meal timing protocols.4:1, 16/8, 20/4, rest assured, they all require you to track caloric intake within your eating window. There is no situation in all that is holy where you can just go balls wild and eat whatever you want just because you did not eat for the 20 hours before a meal. The sooner everyone understands that, the better. That being said...I do IF every year. It's exactly the same as regular eating. I calculate all my macros/caloric allowment, then I cram it all into an 8 hour or sometimes 4 hour window. The numbers do not change. Nothing changes except I only get 8 hours a day to eat it all.

5:2 is not considered true fasting, as you are just eating marginally less on the 2 days..which by definition defies "fasting".

The guy that brought 5:2 into the public eye did an unblinded study on his journey to lose 20lbs. Unblinded, as in biased, probably intentionally. Who does unblind studies these days?

Hmmm, this is the first time I've had someone say 5:2/JUDDD isn't true IF-I'll have to look into the definition of fasting/intermittent fasting closer, for clarification.

Currently I do 8:16IF for maintenance and don't count calories or track anything. It's working great so far :)

That's great to hear. If I don't track calories I tend to undereat by about 1000 calories a day, so...here's to our different sides of the fence.

I think a big part of the reason it's working so well for me is I'm doing a two meal format with no snacking. There's only so much you can eat at one sitting before you feel like you're going to explode lol.

Exactly I've tried it in the past week and I found I was extremely energetic. Sometimes I felt slightly light headed but other than that I felt amazing. Proved to be more productive than usually as well.
I've done (and do) it. It's has been a major contributing factor to my weight loss thus far. Not only do I feel more energized but it also gives me a nice little kickstart when I hit a plateau.

I mainly did it for the same reason, I've been mostly eating clean since January but at some point I stopped losing weight especially the harder I worked out. I wanted to reboot my body in some way so I can start losing weight.

It does actually sound more convenient. I'm just suspicious with convenience when it comes to eating because most of the time it comes with health related disadvantages.

I am just so confused, I've read that eating regularly regulates hormones and boosts your metabolism, how is it possible for fasting to have the same effects?

I just find it so easy especially when you want to eat out, I'd still go for something healthy but healthy doesn't necessarily mean low in calories.

Fasting changed my life. 35lbs in 3 months doing 16/8

Recently started 5:2 - 3lbs gone this week.

    Best thing I've ever done.
