why 10,000 steps?

Hi all,
I have heard from people that have fitbits that they will try whatever they can to reach their 10,000steps in a day. I don't have a fitbit but I was just wondering what the 10,000 steps achieves for these people.

It's just a number a lot have health bodies have decided is a good amount to promote a healthy lifestyle.

It is just a number
But it gives me on average 350-450 more calories to eat each day0
