I know the little girl needed to lose some weight and develop a healthy lifestyle, but the strict regime her parents have her on makes me a little uneasy. Every lifestyle has to have a little flexibility to it. It seems to me that it would be really easy for this little girl to develop an eating disorder. I sincerely hope she doesn't. I hope she always values herself above her weight. It's so hard to grow up and have self worth that is independent from the number on the scale when so much of your surroundings are about your size.

The article didn't tell me enough about the regimen to make a call. When I was that age, I had to practice violin for an HOUR every day. No exceptions. I hated it. I am still not musical, but I don't think that the practice time really harmed me. Similarly, I undertook my own ballet practice schedule from age 11 on - I went to class 5 days a week, an hour and a half a day, and sometimes had rehearshals for a ballet for another hour or two after that. I was only *allowed* to do this if I kept my grades up, so I ended up with straight A's and an intense schedule.
If the child was motivated to stop bullying and trusted her parents to help her, and they helped her in a productive and realistic (this is what life is really like) manner, I don't see a problem with it.0 -
The family was responsible for the child's obesity. The family made a successful effort to change her eating patterns and develop an exercise routine. In my opinion, this was all positive. Not only is this family turning a bad situation around, but they are spending more time together.
I don't understand your concern.0 -
I agree with Road Dog. This girl went from 186 pounds at 9 years old to losing 37 pounds.
The whole family is now on a fitness regimen and it has changed her life.
Could there be psychological issues with the intervention? Maybe so, but I don't see how there was any other choice in the matter. This was a serious health issue and the whole family got involved to tackle it together.
I think it's fantastic. I wish my family had done this for me as a kid.0
