Healthy Breakfast Proteins

I'm trying to increase my protein intake at breakfast time along with cutting down on carbs, e.g. having cereal every day (self-admitted cereal junkie). Of course I'm aware of eggs, and I often will have a couple scrambled with some salsa on top. I also use Shakeology and have it for breakfast some days in addition to the eggs. What, besides fatty meats, are some other options?

Greek yogurt (plain) with some fresh fruit bits, bacon, eggs (I preferred boiled whole eggs)

I like egg scrambles or omelettes with added leftover meats and vegetable (this morning it was an egg white scramble with an oz of salmon and scallions, for example).

<-Can't believe Greek Yogurt hasn't been mentioned yet.

How about a smoothie with whey powder and fruit?

    Cottage cheese and yogurt.

You could also look for a higher protein cereal so that you can keep your cereal. Post's Great Grains line has some good choices.

overnight oats w/ protein powder (proats) , chia seed pudding (w/ protein powder for extra goodness), and all the different kinds of egg preparations (I like to make frittattas and cut it up into portions for the week)

I like the idea of adding protein powders to foods. I should have mentioned that I have a dairy sensitivity; I'm not all-out allergic but if I have too much my stomach initiates war games. I could try to do maybe half a serving of Greek yogurt a couple times a week. Thank you for all the suggestions!

Be careful to get a none whey based protein powder if you have a dairy sensitivity!

My staple breakfast is 50g porridge oats, 25g whey protein and 3.5g creatine monohydrate mixed with boiling water or a little soy milk. If you are sensitive to dairy, hemp, pea and soy protein are widely available. Tastes great, is super filling and has about 30g protein plus some complex carbs. Really helps me get my protein quota.

Turkey sausage or ham, if you're looking to not add too many fat grams. You can mix it into an egg scramble, or, depending on how many carbs you've got to play with, you could make a breakfast sammie on a high fiber bread product of some kind, or even a quesadilla (couple of small taco-sized corn tortillas comes in at maybe 20 carbs).

Some good ideas in here already. One of my go-to breakfasts for a while was half a bagel thin with cream cheese and lox (smoked salmon). I don't know if you tolerate cream cheese well, given your dairy issues, though.

I love grits or oatmeal + sausage. I saute the sausage with a bunch of veggies and spices, e.g., onion, kale, cauliflower, garlic and then have it with 1/2 to 3/4 of grits or oatmeal.

Oops missed the Greek Yogurt in the first reply.

With a dairy sensitivity do you eat your cereal dry? How about the cooked cereals like oatmeal? Not as high on the protein scale, but...

I like that idea of a sheet frittata. I bet it could be baked in the oven, too!

I love cereal as well. So, I take some protein powder and mix it with my almond milk and pour it over Cheerios! Voila! Still cereal AND I get protein. Yup! I also do that with oatmeal.

    High nut-based muesli.

    I find mornflake (UK) non-sweetened swiss-style muesli isn't bad for a cereal.

I know this will sound a bit weird, but add some cottage cheese to your oatmeal. I add it during the last 30-40 seconds in the microwave so that it will melt into the oatmeal. It has a similar texture so you'll hardly notice it and it adds a lot of protein

I eat a couple of eggs and then pump up the volume and protein with egg whites from a carton. Lots more volume and lots more protein with minimal calorie hit. I make a big batch of pinto beans every weekend and I usually have my eggs with a 3 ounce serving of beans and top it with some Hatch Green Chile.

My go to breakfast meat is ham...it is lean and delicious. I also enjoy having fish for breakfast.

Almost every morning I make 3 cage free eggs scrambled with kale, copped sweet peppers, small bit of chopped sweet potatoe and turkey bacon all together in a skillet. It takes less than 10 minutes to make and is yum yum yum... Protein packed!!!!

If you eat oatmeal, add a couple of tablespoons of Spectrum Organic Ground Flax Seed to your oatmeal. That adds 3 grams of protein and gives the oatmeal a nice nutty flavor for about 80 calories per serving. That and a little Cinnamon atop the oatmeal and you've got a really tasty breakfast option. I HATED oatmeal until I added the ground flax seed to it. It's awesome stuff.

Thanks for all the great suggestions (and the giant slab of bacon!!). I use whey protein isolate without issue and also almond or cashew milk on cereal. I love the idea of ground flax seed on oatmeal and having quinoa for breakfast! I actually love quinoa!!

I'm a vegetarian, so I know of a few :) Nuts and nut butters such as peanut butter or almond butter are always a good source of protein. Greek yogurt is also a great source of protein. I always go for the unsweetened and add in a little honey and cinnamon. Eggs and egg whites are good, as is low-fat cheese. Quinoa, which is a type of grain that can be prepared like you would oatmeal. also has a decent amount of protein. Also, Quest protein bars are amazing!

I had been eating steel cut oats with protein powder mixed in for a few weeks, but I switched it up this week and instead am having a sunny side up egg (and today I added egg whites), a morningstar maple flavored sausage patty, a half serving of cottage cheese, cantaloupe, and blackberries. I also add some herbs to the eggs to jazz them up. :D
