What is your definition of healthy?

Why are you trying to avoid dairy?

What non-dairy cheeses have you tried so far?

No cheese is better than fake cheese, IMO.

I agree what is your definition of "healthy"? I can tell you which ones I think taste the best, but just because its non-dairy doesn't necessarily mean its going to be " healthier".

    Non-dairy cheese = rubber.

If you are a true cheese lover (not the Kraft Singles type) then focus on portion control (easier said than done) of high quality i.e. cheese made from grass fed animals. Much healthier option. Here's a site that extols the virtues of grass fed cheeses and quotes some research studies on its health benefits.

OP, if you are avoiding dairy for ethical reasons, I (and other vegans) can offer some recommendations based on what you have tried already.

If you are avoiding for allergy/intolerance reasons, there are people in that boat who can help you.

If it is for "health," you will have to share exactly what you are trying to avoid. But non-dairy cheese isn't magic. It has fat or whatever else you may be trying to avoid.

Been there and done that. They are bloody nasty, plus all the crap they have to add to make them "cheese" like is gross too. I will either just splurge and add a little cheese, use goat or feta (neither one bothers me) or sprinkle nutritional yeast on what ever it is I'm eating. Fake cheese just isn't worth it to me.

If you want a cheese-like flavour in sauces, then add English mustard or nutritional yeast. If you want something spreadable and kind of tangy, then you could look into nut "cheese", which goes well on crackers. Both are tasty, but not cheese. Neither will melt or brown the way a good cheese does. Soy "cream cheese" is ok. Not good, just ok. I don't know of any substitute if you're looking for the stretch of mozzarella, the sweetness of mascarpone or the flavour of any of the blue or white mould cheeses. Paleo parmesan is pretty good if you call it gremolata with nuts rather than trying to convince anyone that it's the same as cheese.

If you love cheese, you'll probably hate non-dairy cheese. It's sadness.

OP? Hellooooo? What do you mean by "healthy" - do you want more nutritional content? Less fat?! It's really hard for people to advise without the full picture.

The one where you finally admit it's not cheese and are no longer disappointed by unrealistic expectations. :)

There is no good substitute for real cheese, however much my vegan OH tries to convince me otherwise. Also, the macros are not good as far as I am concerned - most are low in protein and high in carbs and fat, so it's not worth it. I'd rather have a small amount of the real thing. If you're avoiding dairy for medical / ethical reasons then as already mentioned, you can get better flavour from nutritional yeast.

Just for comparison, here are the macros in Cathedral City mature cheddar:

    100g
    310 cal
    29g protein
    0g carbs
    22g fat

And Cheezy red cheddar style dairy free 'cheese':

    100g
    247 cal
    4g protein
    18g carbs
    18g fat

There is no good substitute for cheese. I personally prefer Daiya, but it's just ok. It's still got fat and it has a weird oily texture.

I use nooch (nutritional yeast) for creamy 'cheese' sauces, and sometimes add in some of the packaged vegan cheese, bit it's not a major part of our diet.

If you aren't avoiding dairy for ethical reasons, and you aren't intolerant to dairy, just eat the dang cheese.
