Lifting gloves

So I do not like wearing gloves while I lift. I like having my calluses and I like being able to feel the bar in my hand etc. My issues has been the last two weeks when I've been deadlifting I've been ripping my calluses. I haven't had any pain or blood or anything, just ripping off the top few layers to the soft underside.

I think this may be from the fact that I am a massage therapist, so I spend a good portion of the day greased up to the elbows in various lotions and oils for my clients.

Does anyone have any suggestions for gloves that aren't super crazy padded, or for something I can tweak so that I don't have to wear gloves?

You can always try chalk powder or gel.

I use cheapies from Target. Hardly any padding but still give me a little protection and grip.

Put a pair of wrist bands over your callouses.

You could try some thinner gardening gloves.

chalk...I've used it for almost a year and never ripped a callous...

If your gym is opposed to the powder chalk there is liquid chalk I believe.

Nothing helpful to say, but I'm curious how the calluses go over with clients, or if they change the way you massage to keep them from contacting your clients.

I also hate wearing gloves to lift as I feel it puts my grip at a disadvantage (especially since my hands are so small already). I used to tear my calluses frequently. I think the best approach is regular callus maintence; I soak, shave and moisturize them almost on a daily basis to keep them low and relatively smooth. Since I started doing this I rarely tear from regular lifting, only occasionally from high rep gymnastics movements.

never2bstopped: I've never had anyone say anything about the calluses. they're not overly huge or rough. I wouldn't be able to do half my strokes if I needed to not make contact with them as they're on the palms of my hands.

The biggest issue that I'm having is that after I rip them it's soft and tender underneath which makes the next workout painful and gives me blisters. painful hands = no fun when my job depends on my hands. I think I will give liquid chalk a try, that's less messy than regular chalk.

In addition to what's been mentioned, make sure you're gripping the bar correctly.

I use yoga mitts instead of regular weight lifting gloves (which were too large, even with the smallest size). I bought them so that I could do yoga without a mat when on the go and realized that they were prefect for lifting. The yoga mitts are thin and are great for gripping the weights because they have rubber on the palm.

TR0berts: thanks that was helpful! I think I may have been doing that. The next deadlift day I'll have to try changing my grip.

Hornsby: that is also helpful, would help with pullups too since my hands sweat and I slip.

    Thanks!

I bought some Mechanix for pull ups and toes to bar work at crossfit. Not much affect on my grip and keeps the skin on my hands from ripping.

Probably gripping the bar wrong and it's sliding down your hand initially as you pull.

If you work on your grip strength, the bar will slide less while you're deadlifting. The tearing of callouses happens when your fingers start to extend. Using chalk and filing down your callouses helps a lot as well. Tearing a callous here or there when we're deadlifting comes with the territory but you can minimize how frequently it happens.
