HI, 20 million Americans, 60 M world wide have CKD and most dont know they do until they reach Stage 3-4 and have health issues. These are not diabetics, but can be. MDs rarely tell patients early on, and then you are scared to death and feeling helpless, and trapped.
If you DO know you have it you are already aware of dietary limits on sodium, phosphorous, potassium…. what to eat? You can only slow the process minimally, but every bit counts to keep the kidneys filtering into old age.
I'd like to start a group interested specifically in dietary needs and weight loss options for us.
Please reply here, or friend me with the word CKD, and we can move over to a Named Group soon.
If you are over 60 you are especially aware your kidneys will continue to drop function yearly..but dialysis is NOT the inevitable.. IF you care for yourself and make good choices now.
There is no medicine to "fix this", no drugs to just solve the problem, no way to raise function and stop decline..this is life, but CKD can be managed through good health choices.
Let's share tips, diet information and discuss options to control what we can.
** PS: CKD also means "Cyclic_ketogenic_diet" at MFP ..this is not that, BUT a low carbohydrate diet may be very helpful for obese Chronic kidney patients, so it is related.

www.davita.com is a nutrition site for kidney & diabetic problems, but it is also high carb.

Hi Ketogenicgurl,
I am very interested in such a group. Although not diagnosed yet, my Gfr is 34.
I have to wait a month before I see my cardiologist, who saw this. I have 3 congenital heart defects which complicates things. So treatments need to be coordinated with her.
But still, this 34 scares me. I don't know what my Creatinen is, but my protein is within normal limits.
I am starting MFP today and am glad I came across your message.
Sincerely,
Annie0
