I got this used adjustable dumbbell. The cap unscrews with an allen wrench. The problem is that I only want one or two plates on each side and it only seems to work with 3, or else theres a space and the plates will slide. Is there a way to make it work without adding more plates? Help!?

Look around the house for something to add as a spacer. If you bring the dumbbell to a hardware store, i'm sure they'll have a wheel or something to fill the space.
Or maybe you can use a spring clip from a sporting goods store:

Normally an Allen wrench is used to SET a weight permanently. Doesn't look like it's an adjustable dumbbell, but one that uses specific plates to create a specific weight resistance.A.C.E. Certified Personal and Group Fitness Trainer

As mentioned, spring clips should work fine.
