Calling all runners - opinions please?

Hi all,

I've never been a runner, always turned away from it as too much like hard work and had sore knees too.

Well recently I've started running 5k and this morning achieved a PB of 26 mins and 12 seconds.

How does that look to you more experienced runners?

The first minute of that time was a fast walk to warm up then I ran at a steady 12.5kph.

Would love your opinions/comparisons/suggestions.

Thanks!

BFM

Well, the 5K world record is about 12 and a half minutes.

Of course, in running so much is dependent on surface, hills, wind, temperature...not to mention age, gender, weight, experience, injury, health conditions, etc of the runner. Unless you're challenging for world dominance, you have two options: (1) compete with yourself (2) enter local races and try to improve your standing within your age group.

Congratulations on the PR! Keep at it!

That's 1 second under my PB and I've been running for 18 months, so I for one am both jealous and impressed. I suck at 5Ks.

Seconded the advice to consider your environment and compete against yourself primarily. If you're a new runner you can be proud of the fact you can even run 5K. Keep going!

Congrats on the PR! It's a good time, but don't compare your time to others'. Compete with yourself and keep working on getting that PR down little by little!

Since you never ran before and haven't been running that long that is a pretty decent time. If you keep up the training long term with a good progressive plan I expect you will be moving towards the front of the pack at those races.

In local races it seems to me that the average pace is about 8 - 9 minutes per mile for a 5K time of 25 to 28 minutes. That means you would be faster than about 50% of the people in a 5K race.

    Age Grade for comparison.

At a 26min 5k PR, I think the best thing a person can do is simply run more.
