Exercising with an (knee) injury

I'm going to the orthopedist today to get it checked out, but I've got this feeling in my gut that I'm looking at a torn ligament in my knee. If this is true, I'm assuming surgery and PT are in my near future :(

How should I stay active during recovery? I'm going to be super bummed I can't do any aerobic activities (bike/elliptical) but I accept that is probably going to be the case. I've lost 20+lbs in the past 2-3 months but that success was heavily dependent on being able to work out at the gym.

Thanks in advance.

Your PT/orthopedist will tell you what rehab exercises to do.

In all likelihood, the PT will be quite difficult (at least from a pain and effort standpoint). Since you're not going to be able to do the cardio you're used to, you will need to address the volume of food you're eating to ensure you remain at a deficit (assuming you want to continue to lose fat).

You should still be able to do lifting with your upper body. So, if you are taking in enough protein, you won't lose as much muscle during this time. Just make sure you're sticking with your PT program so you come back from this injury/surgery.
