Hi everyone, just a quick question.

I have been on here for a week tomorrow and I have been doing 10,000+ steps per day (which I started doing on Friday, before then I was doing approx. 4,000 max per day)

At the moment my activity level is set to sedentary as thats what I was before I started.

As I am doing 10,000 - 15,000 steps per day would you say that I should change my activity level to lightly active or active?

Thank you in advance

Active, unless you're logging some of that as exercise
  • Thank you, and no not logging any as extra exercise

I'm guessing you have a pedometer then? Is it not one that you can connect to MFP? I set my activity level to sedentary and let my Fitbit tell me when to eat calories back. That way on the days when I do don't do anything I'm not overeating.

In that case it should be adjusting your calories accordingly. I leave mine set on sedentary because I like to see the extra calories get added, but I don't think it really matters as long as you have negative adjustments enabled. I'd just rather have it set low and get more exercise calories than have it set high and have it taking them away. ;)

I'd switch to lightly active. I average 20k steps a day (including exercise though) and I'm set at lightly active.

Then I think it's easiest to set your activity level to sedentary and let your Fitbit tell you what to eat back. That way you eat what you should be each day rather than relying on an average that may not always be correct (unless you prefer having the same amount of calories each day, of course).

I use an activity tracker as well...and average about 8-10k steps pre exercise. I set my activity level to lightly active as I use TDEE and don't want to see those extras....unless it is exercise which I typically delete after it syncs....

^^ I totally agree. For the most part I'm not sedentary, but still have it set that way, and anything that I do outside of designated exercise is just icing on the cake.....oops, I mean gravy......F@&%, I mean it's just extra credit....yeah.

I use lightly active as well and average 14k steps per day. I don't use active because of the negative calories issue iliftheavyacrylics mentioned.

exactly...I actually disabled those as there are days (few and far between) that I don't get 10k in but doesn't mean I want to lose calories...it all evens out for me in the end so all is good.
