Hey Ladies,
Wondering if any of you exprericed frequent periods(more than once per month) while dropping weight. Started restricting calories (1250) doing some cardio, and using weights, and toning exercising. Drinking about 84oz of water/day. I dont feel deprived, or hungry. I had menses the week of 3-30 and just got it again this week. In my short research, read it was the fat cells breaking down and releasing estrogen. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but I did have some trouble with having multiple periods a month for about 5 or 6 months while losing weight. After talking to my doctor I switched to a lower-hormone birth control and with a little time that sorted everything out. I'm not sure if you're on BC, but if so it's something to consider.

In my long research (as in, having a period every month for the last decade and a half lol), I've learned that extra periods can pop around for what seems like no reason. Whether it's stress or a change in activity level, diet, etc, it just happens sometimes.

It seems like it could be exactly what you found out through your own research. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it becomes a frequent occurrence. :)

@ rabbitjb, yes I am eating back most calories burned during cardio.
Yes, I am on bcpills..Defnitely will consider lowering if this continues.

just to say, i would personally get checked out if it was concerning me. it seems like a bad idea to not go to the dr because people on the internet say so.

My cycle lengths are affected in the opposite direction, meaning that they get longer when I have changes in diet or exercise levels. I'll be at 30 days or so and then suddenly it's 49 days or 63 days and then back to 28. I'm used to the changes so I don't worry about it but if it is something new, I think you should see your doctor just to be sure. S/he knows your health history and knows if it is cause for concern.

I've had a couple of extra periods during weight loss, but I usually just consider them early periods rather than extra. :)

That's been true for me as well. This time they were about 2 weeks apart.

I got random periods several months into following WW a couple of years ago, and a month into using MFP this time around, but it seems to be linked to my contraception.
I have the implant but I'm now taking progesterone pills to try to stop the random bleeding, because I was having 2-3 "proper" periods a month.
I really hope it's something I can fix with hormones rather than being related to weight loss.

I've found my cycle length has shortened. With having PCOS my normal cycle when fat was 30-35 days long. Now it's between 24-28 so I seem to have loads more periods now. Doh ha ha

I have never had an "extra" period but mine used to start every 4-5 weeks and now it's every 3 weeks like clockwork (after going from morbidly obese to average weight).

I was taking this down another train of thought. With extra periods make sure you are getting adequate iron and fluids.

It is quite common amongst my Bariatric surgery group, who experience faster than normal weight loss, to experience hormonal fluctuations. For me, maybe less noticeable. But that might be because I have a phlegmatic partner who rolls with the punches. I finally hit menopause; who knows how that is going to change things!
