Where does it go? How does it work?

Hi there, I don't want to sound a bit thick but can anyone explain exactly how the fat/weight is removed from the body?
I know that energy is burned by muscles and if you haven't eaten enough to fuel the activity (i.e. deficit) then reserves (i.e. fat) will be called upon as energy but ...
How does it all work?
Is anything excreted in this process as waste by breath vapour/sweat/normal excretion processes/other?
It is just something I have always to know a bit more detail about so if you are 'in the know' - I'd love to hear from you
