Jogging/Running in Place

I hate running... let me just put that out there right away!!

However, I DO jog because it's a good cardiovascular workout and since heart issues run in my family I figure a good workout for the ticker is the best thing I can do for myself. But, as good as I know it is for me, I still really don't enjoy it be it on my treadmill (which recently died) or outside as I can't go with my dog and I really hate the stupid and sometimes lewd comments which range from the classic "Fatty Fat Fat Fat trying to run" to "Hey Baby, nice shake!! Wanna taste my fry?!" comments.

So, I've started jogging/running in place inside while watching my shows. What I want to know is A. Is this a good alternative to classic running be it treadmill or outside; and
B. How can I make this workout even better (I have been adding in hand weights and doing things like curls and punches and stuff trying to up my burn)

Thanks!!

You could try different exercises indoors like jump rope training, or HiiT workouts. Have a look on YouTube and you will find a bunch of free workouts you can do at home. I like Zuzka Light and Bodyrock TV, or you can find Jillian Michaels workouts on there. Loads of interesting workouts you could do at home.

Jessica Smith on YouTube has some walking/jogging based videos with other things added in for interest, balance, strength, more intensity, etc. Once you get going, you could probably construct your own similar routine while watching your shows! (It's just good to practice with instruction first, for form and such.)

You can also look up things like quiet cardio, low impact cardio, etc.

I'm not sure that jogging in place is AS good as the treadmill, but it's definitely going to be better than nothing. Do you have maybe something you could step up onto, like a sturdy low stool or a big book you'd not mind sweating on/wrecking? You could do a bit of stepping up/down.

Personally, I like the low impact cardio type things, because the variety keeps me interested and keeps me working hard, and because I can do them free at home. And so if you really don't like running, I'd say find a cardio activity you DO like (or at least like more!).

If you hate running, do not run, it is not something you must do. You do need some sort of cardio but it does not have to be running. Taking your dog for a long walk every day is awesome exercise and all the cardio you need to prevent health issues. There is no health benefit from running over walking.

For years I exercised on the NordicTrak ski machine. It is old school but I liked it because it is low impact. You can set it up in front of a TV (or not). They fold up to store out of sight. These can be found on Craigslist for $50.

Step aerobics might be a solution, too. Plenty of workouts on Youtube.
