Want to start lifting

Ok..so here is the basics...I'm 5'2 and have lost 35 lbs since August. I currently weigh 168. Up until now, I have been focusing mostly on my eating and get some moderate exercise in. Moderate has been in the form of walking, pilates and 30 day shred a few days a week.
When I was in high school, I was fit and strong. But...fast forward 20 years and I just let it all go. However, I am working to get back. I want to start weight training because I know it would be good for me, however I am truly terrified to do it. My right shoulder just, well, for lack of a better word, sucks. It bothers me a lot and while I think that weight training would strengthen it and in the long run help it, I am afraid of overdoing it and having setbacks. I can't afford a trainer, and I am just getting back into the gym scene. I am starting swimming in hopes that it will help with the achy joints.
Now the question is, does anyone have advice for what to do without a trainer? Can I start on the machine weights? Should I start there? The gym I joined has everything, so my options are pretty big. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
