Hi! Im new here and have currently been sticking to a plan of 1, 290 calories a day for five days. However, after flicking through a few posts in the community here a lot of people were saying how low 1290 calorie intake was and that the lowest intake before starvation mode is 1200? I haven't heard anything about this before and yesterday in particular I ate little more than 1000 calories including exercise so now im a little worried! I don't want to enter 'starvation' mode I jist find it difficult to stick to 1290 im either over it or way under it! At the moment my average is just over 1000 calories. Is this bad? I haven't noticed any drastic change in weight within five days so I figured this wasn't bad? I should probably mention I am 20 year olf female at 5 foot 4 and weigh about ten stone ten. I didn't put anything drastic but said I wanted to lose 10 pounds at about 1 pound a week. It was difficult to put a goal weight in as I don't really weigh myself but more see visible effects of weight loss. I rarely exercise except for the odd walk during the day from places so I placed myself as sedentary as im usually sat down at university during the day and am not running around after children etc. I have started going on the treadmill rarely just for about a half hour fast walk that the treadmill calculates burns 250 calories. Should I adjust my goals etc to be eating more or is everything right? Any help would be great!

You should be fine. Sedentary sounds right based on what you said, your height and estimated weight are basically the same as mine. The starvation mode thing does not happen quickly, it happens after a very long period of time. A very long period of time. The time it will take you to reach the 10lbs lost is no where near the time it would take you to possibly reach what people commonly call starvation mode. If you are really worried about starvation mode, you should look it up for yourself. Some people don't believe it is real, some people believe it is real, you should look into it and find out which side you are on if it is something you are really concerned about.

I'd just make sure you eat half your exercise calories back! As you progress I'd suggest increasing exercise by walking outdoors more and other stuff too :)

Actually, the World Health Organization recommends to eat at least 1000 ccal a day. The process of losing weight is not a simple graph down. It can contain "stairs" or "plato" on your way (when the weight actually isn't going down). These days you should make some waist and hips measurements. Your body is rebuilding itself. And it may go like, that the "sizes" are going down while the weight stands still.
  • Okay - thanks for your help guys :)

Starvation mode is a myth...adaptive thermogenisis (where your metabolism adapts to a low calorie intake) takes a fairly long time to happen.

But with 10lbs to lose for MFP to give you 1290 calories you are either very short and/or very small to start with or you have set your goals to 2lbs a week....perhaps re-evaluate that.

    Ignore starvation mode.
Have realistic expectations and patience. Time and again younger women get frustrated early on because they think they will lose weight quickly without understanding how weight loss works. With so little to lose 0.5lbs a week is more likely.
1200 is a minimum amount most people should be eating for basic nutrition. I think you should be less aggressive, go and lift some weights if you want soemthing to do.

Starvation mode has been proven by science to be a myth.

Starvation Mode is not real. You eat nothing for months and your body would not go into starvation mode.

^^^This, I'm guessing at 20 years old and only 10lbs to lose you have your goal set to aggressively.
  • I have only set my goal for 1lb a week and am 5 foot 4
