When to begin lifting?

I was active on here 3 years ago, lost a lot of weight, had another baby and am back to try to lose it again. One thing I read time and time again from women is that the weight really started melting off when they finally started lifting heavy. But these are women who had established a basic level of fitness and lost a fair amount of weight first before lifting.

My question is--can someone start a weight training routine from day one of trying to get in shape, or do you need to lose some weight and gain a higher level of fitness first?

If you can start from day one--what lifting program would you recommend?

Thanks!

Day one. Start with compound lifts (full body movements with free weights). Make sure you focus on your form and use lighter weights for at least the fist month if you haven't lifted before.

Any of these programs will be great:

    Starting strength
New rules of lifting for women
    Thinner leaner stronger
    Strong lifts 5x5

    Start when you're a teenager.

If you weren't lifting in utero, it may already be too late.

There is no good reason to weight. Just make sure to follow a structured program that takes you along slowly, such as the ones that have been mentioned.
