Can someone burst my bubble about muscle milk?

I put the link below, but I'm totally hooked on these, mainly chocolate, but also cookies and cream. Is something wrong with having them once or twice a day? I feel like they are the perfect protein, fat, carb, calorie mix for my regimen, especially when I'm doing 6 small meals a day. And I can grab one at the gas station at lunch time, etc. instead of heading to the Wendy's drive through. Thoughts?

If you like the taste and they fit in your goals, what are you concerned about?
Are they crowding other things you need out of your diet?0 -
wow 220 calories each....even with the 40 grams of protein I would prefer to eat real food than drink my calories.
When I do use protein supplements they are in a smoothie I have made with fruit, cranberry juice and almond milk..I wouldn't just drink a protein shake ever...0 -
If they fit, keep you satiated, and you're willing to pay a bit extra to keep from having to mix stuff up yourself, I don't see a downside.0
-
My opinion is that they are fine as a quick and convenient source of protein. Although, at 43 bucks for 12 servings, they seem pretty pricey. You could get a huge tub of whey protein for about the same price. Also, I suggest you get most of your protein from "real" whole foods such as meat, fish, beans, etc. Use a shake as a supplement if you are not hitting your protein numbers. I have Muscle Milk every once in a while if I need something quick.
My general rule is to eat as much whole foods as possible, but do what you need to meet your macro numbers while staying within your calorie allotment.0 -
If you like them and can make them fit in your day, there is no reason you shouldn't continue to drink them.0
-
i prefer the muscle milk light version, which is MUCH smaller than most others-
Additionally, they are 100 cals/15g protein. They usually cost 6 bucks for a 4 pack which i can bring to work the whole week.
The only downside i would say for those are... that's 220 cals out of your daily goal, and the price is INSANE! That would be 90$ a month if you had one every day!
Don't get me wrong, i like muscle milk, but i also kind of feel like they are oil-ey-ish. Just like drinking oil kind of.0 -
Not exactly kept it simple have theyOther Ingredients:

So since my goal is now 1800 calories per day, I try to eat 200-300 calories every 2 to 3 hours and that way if I'm not perfect I'm not derailed, so I find myself sitting in the office working, and realize I haven't eaten in a couple of hours, and grab one of the 220 calorie ones at the gas station and it keeps me on that goal. Not sure why people consider 220 calories to be high for a meal but might be confused by some of the posts.
But when you say what am I worried about, it's like people say here about eating your calories instead of drinking them, I wondered if there were health reasons not to rely on this, but nutritionally, it's one of the best I've seen. I drink the light ones too, but depends on where I am in my calorie count for the day.
As far as cost, I've accepted that I'm going to spend more than I'd want to lose weight. Figure this is better than the 99 cent spicy chicken nuggets I used to be hooked on at Wendy's. Because I spend 3 hours of the day driving to and from work, and between 8 and 12 hours AT work, or work-related activities, meetings, etc. I don't cook a lot, and when I do I want fast things. I've been a lot better about cooking on Sundays and bringing healthy snacks with me to work though. I used to be a lot worse, or forget to eat and be ravenous by dinner time, which led to awful eating.0 -

Not sure what your point is there...most of that stuff is essential vitamins and minerals, which hardly seems cause for alarm.
OP, if they fit into your day and you like them and they're not breaking the bank, why not? I have a Quest bar every weekday morning and I don't feel bad about it because they're easy for me to stomach, convenient, and give me good macros. They're not cheap but I don't mind the price in exchange for a breakfast I like.0 -

There is nothing to worry about as far as weight loss and eating vs. drinking your calories. Most people just prefer to eat them, rather than drink a high calorie shake. I definitely prefer to eat my calories. I just don't feel like I've eaten after I have a protein shake.0 -
You can buy Muscle Milk in a tub, too and mix it up into a shake yourself. It's MUCH cheaper that way.0

True. I do have a friend that mixes her protein powder with water and drinks it over the course of a couple of hours. I imagine it's lukewarm by the time she finishes. There's no accounting for taste...

The title was half joking, but like I said, a lot of people say eat your calories instead of drinking them so was making sure it wasn't because drinking so many calories was unhealthy for some reason.
Thanks!0 -

yeah I have wonderslim protein packets that I mix up, but I find between cleaning up the cups at work and taking the time to mix them, I do it less often than the drinks that I can buy across the street from my office. Thanks for the tip though!

Do you have refrigeration at work? Perhaps you can save by buying a case and keeping a stash in the fridge at work.0
-
It doesn't matter about the eating versus drinking calories if it keeps you satisfied and is working for you. Most people say that so as not to "waste" calories on drinks with little to no nutritional value. Protein inherently keeps you fuller longer, so I say drink up.0
-
yes I have a small dorm sized refrigerator that is shared with 5 people lol. So I actually do keep some things in there, but not that much0
-
these replies are making me happy lol0
-
depends on the carb count/sugar Anything that's low fat =sugar You can get 100% whey protein muscle milk If thats what you like. I drink alot of protein shakes mostly post workout. Sometimes 3 a day depending on what I'm doing. I am ultra low carb and it works for me:) Good luck!0
-
FYI - I splurge and "drink" my calories on days where I need a treat and this is what I feel like or just if I feel like I don't have enough time or motivation to do something real. Whole foods are great but when I can't find the oomph or I'm not capable of getting it together to make real food I don't mind reaching for a nutrient replacement.0
-
also if your looking to shed body fat stick to 30 grams or less of carbs per day. Try to cut out as much sugar as you can:)0
-
I like the Ensure protein drinks. I never liked to eat breakfast, but could stomach a cold shake in the morning. Since I'm fairly lazy and like to sleep in as much as possible, a cold protein shake does the trick most weekday mornings. I'm not adverse to protein bars either for a quick snack- I like everything from a lower cal, lower protein bar like Fiber One protein bar to Balance Bars/Pure Protein bars. It keeps me in pretty good with my calorie allotment, helps me stick to my macros, and gives me a boost in protein. As for "real food," I pretty much eat that for my other meals/ snacks.0
