Sodium Intake fluctuations - okay?

I find that I either eat way less than the recommended sodium (which is most of the time) or eat way over - today I'm over by 1230, for example, and another day I was well over too - because I'd had chicken soup for dinner. I'm just wondering if this is okay - my intake is irregular but i get plenty of sodium in bursts. Does my body store sodium?

    Hi:

I always try to limit excessive sodium. All pre packaged food items have tons (i.e. prepared soups). I buy some canned soups with less sodium than the rest but it is still high.
My experience with higher sodium intake is my body retains more water. My body weight goes up. After I drink a lot of water and some exercise, it goes back to normal. Therefore, I try to avoid excessive sodium in my food.
Good luck in your healthy journey

This is a good question! I'm not really sure how sodium works in the body. I think most of us are unlikely to get low on it (although that has happened to both my mom and my grandfather). I think it is normal to vary day by day and I'm sure there is some kind of stored or circulating supply. I don't worry too much about sodium, but it is a little harder to see your progress if you are retaining water.

The only time I've been able to go really low is when I did the 21dayfix meal plan and honestly, I like it...but couldn't sustain it long term because I work out a lot and it's very difficult. I was actually worried about not getting enough sodium because there were days I was only getting 800-900 a day. As mentioned just drink a ton of water, workout, and call it a day.
