The Deli Counter

Has anyone ever asked to see the nutrition info while perusing deli meat at the counter at the grocery store? Were the workers annoyed?

I tried asking this on Facebook as I used to work at Kroger and have friends that still do, but a few friends and family are getting worried about my determination to track.

I guess it doesn't help that I also posted about how I'm getting burnt out, but I'm in a better mood today.

I don't really buy processed meat, besides the very odd pack of prosciutto. If I was going to I'd likely buy the stuff already packaged....makes life easier!

Just google it ahead of time. Most brands have their nutrition info posted online.

Deli meat is a vice for me because I love turkey and I'm not going to bake one every week..lol I do the low sodium healthy choice but don't let the name fool you its still has sugar in it and some other crap I don't want to know about.. I keep it down to three meals a week and out of my 42 meals a week its not to bad. Google is a better place to look up info on food than the hourly over worked under paid employee. My 2 cents

I ask them to give me the entire thing, then I take a picture of the nutrition facts on the back and give it back and ask for whatever amount I want. ;) I have gotten some funny looks, but nobody was ever annoyed... They don't have to do any extra work other than hand me the giant lump of packaged meat!

I've never had to ask as my store has all the nutritional info either posted or the info on the package is facing out so the consumers can see it. As a rule I select the ones with the least sodium and stick to either boards head brand or dietz & Watson since they are less processed than most of the others.

I do. Some workers are annoyed and some aren't. They won't let me touch the meat but hold it for me, which makes sense for sanitary reasons. Not all brands have websites with the info posted, especially small local or store brands so I ask. On the other hand, one of my local stores has started carrying Boar's Head which has a website as well as brochures on top of the counter with all of the info. I love their no salt added turkey breast and their low sodium roast beef. Expensive, but they have less than 100mg of sodium per serving (compared to 500-700 for most deli meats) so it is worth it to me.
