I read a study online that said people who drink diet soda are more likely to have abdominal fat and due to drinking diet soda they ate more calories. I have been drinking diet instead of regular soda but I am still loosing weight. Just wondering if anyone else found it to help or hinder abdominal fat???

False. I switched a year ago and I'm still losing. I only cut out regular soda so I wasn't wasting 150-300 calories a day on it and could eat more, but still within my deficit.

    whatever. lolololol

a calorie deficit will lead to weight loss, and where your body loses first is a matter of genetics, not what you drink.

I drink less water when I drink diet soda, and it makes me want a snack, so I try to limit it to an afternoon pick me up or with dinner. But I have no idea what it's done to my stomach fat. :D I didnt get fat drinking diet soda. ;)

Drinking soda is just as bad for you as cigarettes. Stop drinking sodas. Drink water. People have done it for thousands of years. So can you.

Only the sugary, bubbly stuff showed this effect. Epel didn’t see any association between telomere length and diet soda intake.

    Nice try

From the study it's talking about:
Results. After adjustment for sociodemographic and health-related characteristics, sugar-sweetened soda consumption was associated with shorter telomeres (b = –0.010; 95% confidence interval [CI] = −0.020, −0.001; P = .04). Consumption of 100% fruit juice was marginally associated with longer telomeres (b = 0.016; 95% CI = −0.000, 0.033; P = .05). No significant associations were observed between consumption of diet sodas or noncarbonated SSBs and telomere length.

For some reason only carbonated sodas had an effect, but only the ones with sugar. That sounds weird already.

Who cares. Soda just sucks. Stop looking for excuses to wash your body with sodas diet or not.

Very strong argument after someone told you you're wrong.

I'm not looking for excuses. The only time I drink more than a can is on Sundays when I need the caffeine for work. The rest of the time I drink water.

This is a CORRELATIONAL study. All it says is that there are people who a) drink diet soda and b) have belly fat. That doesn't mean that diet soda causes belly fat. I've lost 50 pounds (mostly in my stomach) on diet soda!

Sodas don't fill you up. Continue drinking diet soda, once you're tracking your calories and staying under.
I drink a no calorie soda almost every day, sometimes more than 1. And nearly at my target weight. no hindrance at all.

And to the person that says it ages you or kills you or whatever.
There are "studies" about every single food or drink in existance and negative effects of it.
don't believe most of them. treats are nice for everyone.

I hate hot liquids so i drink a lot of diet soda. Whatever it does to you I seem to be losing weight just fine on a calorie restricted diet even with the diet drinks.

I've lost 19 inches, measured at the navel, while drinking the stuff. Imagine how well I'd have done without it!

For some people, I'm sure drinking the diet soda justifies them going back for a second helping of dinner/lunch or whatever, because they aren't drinking their calories.

    Nothing but a mind game.

I drink both diet and regular soda, and I'm down 18 lbs so far.

The only way any food/drink causes someone to get fat is overindulgence :)

I don't think drinking diet soda keeps a person from losing weight because it really is all about the CICO. However, for me personally, it makes me crave food & sugary things all day long. I also get bloated. So, for me, diet soda is a no no. I'll have it now & again as a treat but that's all. I stay with water.

I love Diet Coke. Drinking a glass with my lunch/dinner makes me feel fuller sooner and I eat less as a result.
