Fatty liver disease

I was recently diagnosed with NAFLD...advice was to lose weight. Anyone else on here had the same diagnosis and advice they can share that will help clear up the problem? TIA...

My sister in law was diagnosed last summer with fatty liver disease. Her doctor said if she didn't lose weight, her liver would fail within 10 years. The doctor immediately advised her to get a form of gastric bypass surgery. Within 6 months of diagnosis, she had lost the required weight and did counseling to be approved for the surgery. I'm not sure which procedure she had but I think it was the lap band.

All I can say is from the outside looking in, I feel bad that she had to resort to surgery and couldn't lose the weight on her own. IMHO, she is now a prisoner to the procedure. Though she has lost a substantial amount of weight, it's because the lap band makes it impossible for her to eat too much food at any one time...not necessarily because she is in control. If you are in early stages of FLD, you may have time to lose the weight and improve the condition.

I was close to it. My doctor told me to avoid seafood and exercise. It pulled the numbers down, thank goodness.

weigh and log food to your calorie defecit and move more

Thanks everyone for the advice, and link...I am going to stay with my new program and be positive the blood tests will reflect this in a few months..

Didn't your doctor advise a low carb diet? I eat LCHF and I know people are eating this way to treat fatty liver... I just assumed it was doctor recommended but maybe not? LCHF for Beginners, if you're interested and some studies I've seen linked to recently:

Those studies seemed to recommend low carb, but not a LCHF diet. More fat is not what a fatty liver needs.

Caloric deficit. Start with eating less and moving more. It will come.

@Kenellen1 If you are also diabetic or pre-diabetic, ask the doctor if LC is a good option for you. It tends to go hand in hand with NAFLD. It won't work any faster than anything else, but it may help you control hunger and keep you off medication if you adapt to it well.

Hey,
I too had fatty liver.
I ate and exercised and within three months my levels were down to normal. Bearing in my they were at a very high level, it can be done.
Just keep focused.
It's a hard journey x

Thanks for the advice, each of you...thank heavens I am not pre diabetic...hubby is diabetic, so I know how serious that can be...working towards lowering the carbs for both of us and so far, working well...have a great weekend everyone..
