Ok so probably a strange question. I'm a nurse and work 3 * 12 hour shifts a wk. As you can imagine u spend a lot of the day walking up and down the ward.
should I record part of these hours as exercise or not?

No. That's part of your activity level. If you're really interested in seeing how much you burn, you can purchase an activity tracker.

No - that would be double counting assuming you set your activity setting correctly.

it is not exercise, it is part of your daily activity level.

which if you are full time (35+ hours/week) i would set as active or highly active.

I have my activity level set as sedentary as the days I'm off I'm it always as active so was worried I'd be over eating if I set it different. I set it as that as I wasn't on my most if the day every day. also I'm not exercising atm on days off due to knee injury x
so should I be changing my activity level even though I only work 3*times a week

So you set your activty setting as sedentary even though you know you aren't sedentary.....

Don't bring exercise or lack of exercise into it - that's separate from activity settings.

yeah id probably go with active or lightly active (try active first and if you are losing too quickly, or experiencing hunger or mood swings, change to lightly active) . dont forget, on days off you can always eat less too, just make sure you are eating around 1200ish on those days ;)

You could check what the difference is between sedentary and active for your stats, then on days where you're working, give yourself that difference in calories as exercise calories. If you put it into your activity level, you'll probably be really hungry on days when you work and not very hungry on days when you don't, because you're only working 3/7 days.
Or, as other people said, you could buy an activity tracker that syncs with Myfitnesspal and adjusts your daily calorie goal for you. I have a Fitbit and it really suits me, because I work on a part-time flexible contract, so my hours really vary. It just depends whether you can afford it, and will use it to make the most out of it.

At most, I would go with lightly active. Active is more for people who are out digging ditches or something. But really, there's nothing wrong with starting at sedentary and if you find you are losing weight more quickly than you would expect, changing it to something else later.
