exercises not on the list?

I am typing my exercises into the search bar, and they are coming up as 'not on the list'. How could side lunges and squats not be on the list? I also noticed that lunges are there, but when I type lunges, it says it isnt. A friend recommended this fitness pal thing to me, and I am starting to think it is an annoying waste of time.

Lunges and squats sounds like aerobics to me. Just pick something that has similar kinds of movement in it. I can't log my dojo workouts as Aikido either. I have to log them as (generic) martial arts. Not all martial arts or even one workout to another are the same or have the same energy output. Luckily I also wear a fitbit and it tones down the calorie burn based on my actual activity.
I also can't log hoof trimming... at all. I put it down as horse grooming. But hoof triming is some very intense horse grooming that requires activation of pretty much every muscle in my body while also weight bearing. There is just no actual data for that. So I go with horse grooming knowing it is going to way underestimate the actual burn.
Sometimes you just have to compromise a bit.0 -
For bodyweight strength stuff people usually use "calisthenics". For weights and cardio combined, "circuit training" is the popular option.0

MFP is really a calorie counter/calculator...I don't even bother with the exercise options, I track all that separately. If you're using it solely to track exercise, you are completely wasting your time.0

pretty much that. unless its direct cardio or similar you likely wont find exactly what you need and it probably wont be accurate, anyways (mfp grossly over estimates).
for things like lunges and all, i dont even log it as an exercise. when i log strength training, i do it from the cardio section (which might work for you just dont eat all those calories back)

Both lunge and squat are under Strength Training, where you can enter sets/reps/weights - you will not get estimated Calories burned unless you log the time separately under Cardiovascular (see below). The MFP exercise search function is rudimentary, so the less letters you type in before clicking search, the better. Search for only the first three or four letters, such as "lun" or "lung" and "squ" or "squa" to get a longer display list of exercises.
Add "Strength training (weight lifting, weight training)" to Cardiovascular to get estimated Calories Burned added to your Diary. Please note that the Calories burned for Cardiovascular exercises provided by MFP are based on published metabolic equivalent of tasks (METs), which are estimates for a general population and may differ for you as an individual. If desired, add individual strength training exercises, such as "Biceps Curl," to Strength Training to have a log of sets, reps, and weights as individual exercises.
