    Rule #1: Have fun!

It's your first race, so enjoy the newness and excitement! Your adrenaline will be pumping, so definitely start towards the back and try not to go too fast early on (I still fight that, years later).

Stick around and cheer on others. I find runners to be some of the most supportive people around.

Only other practical suggestion I have: Nothing new on race day. Don't wear new clothes or shoes; no diet changes.

And shout out for Houston, as that's where I live. Might see you at a race in the future!

It'll be fun and exciting but resist the urge to go faster than usual. My sister is a long long long time runner and marathoner. Her great advice was to walk one minute every ten, just in case the thrill is pushing you too hard. That brief walk keeps gas in the rank and you will keep a great pace right until the end. Best tip I've ever had.

That's a good one. I would love to run the whole thing but I don't think I can at this point. However, I will get there
