Carbs Calorie confusion

Why do I lose more weight eating more calories and less carbs than when I eat less calories with normal carbs?
example: I did south beach back in Nov and lost 9lbs in 2weeks. I never ate more than 80gms carbs but ate well over 2000 calories.
But it doesn't make sense with the calories in calories out approach.
As much as I liked the results of the low carb diets I can't sustain it so came back to calorie counting for more balanced approached but always wondered why/how it worked.

Water weight loss in the first couple of weeks of low carbing is normal.
Unfortunately you want to lose fat not water.....0
