HELP. ...
how do I explain this... during workouts I try and breath the correct way as they say to do, inhale up exhale down, well I have a very hard time with this, and I get all out of breath trying to do it the right way but I am more comfortable breathing on my own not thinking about the correct way... so I guess my question would be, does it affect the workout if you don't do it the "correct way"
Thanks MFP community! !

There is no "correct" way to breathe as far as I'm concerned. Breathe in a way that is comfortable for you.0

Don't worry about breathing technique. You're still alive, so you've been doing it right all these years
I know what you mean though, there's so much focus on breathing techniques in different programs (in through the nose, out through the mouth is the method I see most often). But as long as you are getting enough oxygen into your system during your workouts, I can't see it making a difference.0 -
Yes thank you, I get so put of breath just trying to breath right and I'm like ooooooooooo lord..... I just didn't know if it would affect the workout...0

Affect the workout how? It's not going to make a difference in the calorie burn or anything. If it does make any type difference, you'll know it, but it seems to me that forcing yourself to breathe in a way that isn't comfortable for you is already affecting it negatively....0 -
The breathing is not so important, except during the squat and to a lesser extent, the deadlift.
So, don’t worry about it. Over time, you’ll get into a pattern that fits the level of effort and movement pattern. The funny thing is most people think that breathing is about getting oxygen. In fact, your blood and muscles have enough oxygen to make the lift, what you’re breathing for is to remove waste (carbon dioxide). That is the harder part of the exchange.
Any way, for what you’re doing, focus on form, not breathing. Breathing only matters when it is affecting your form. For example, with squats, many new lifters who focus on breathing out on the concentric portion of the lift start letting the air out too soon and their core releases. It is often best for them to breathe in on the eccentric, hold at the bottom and for the first part of the concentric lift, starting to let it out around the midpoint of the concentric portion.

This was very confusing for me until my yoga teacher explained it. I hope I can do as well. Breathing naturally is better than trying to breathe to a pattern, as everyone in the room will need to take their breath at a different time. So when my instructor calls for me to breathe out, I do so, but then take in the breath naturally as soon as I need to. No forcing. The same when I am asked to take a breath in. I follow my instructor, but then take a breath out when I naturally need to.
All the breathing exercises make a lot more sense now.
I realize you are talking about various exercises and lifts and whether you are supposed to be breathing in or out at the moment. These do help because you are letting your core muscles in to the action. Do as instructed but then take any natural "little breaths" in between to keep it natural (and from blacking out!)
This is the easiest breathing meditation ever, and really works for me.0 -

Yes that's how I ment. And I do understand the core is involved. . Meaning will I defeat my workouts by not breathing correctly??

Like I said, no. If you focus on your core, the breathing will fall in line.
