I have just noticed that my daily sugar allowance is 54g on a 1430 calorie a day plan, is 54g a lot in a day?

It's set at 15% of calories. 90g a day is the recommended daily intake in the EU/Aus for ~2000 calorie intake.

As it includes all sugars from all sources it isn't "a lot" as the average added sugars is about 135g/day in many countries.

My allowance through MFP is usually about 66 grams (1750 calories per day). When I looked it up, it says the daily limit should be about 25 grams per day for females (via the American Heart Association). Not sure why it is different for men vs. women, I'm guessing it should be based on calorie intake. I'm not sure how MFP calculates them though. It does sound high!

I'm not sure, but I do know MFP recommends I consume no more than 32g of sugar a day on my 1,600 calorie goal. HA. I've never ever been able to stay under, needless to say. I don't agree with a lot of recommendations. I believe consuming large amounts of added sugars can indeed cause adverse effects, but natural sugars in fruits, grains, dairy, etc. won't hurt you as long as you stay within your caloric goal. I never really pay too much attention to sugar to be completely honest, and my sugar levels are always fine when I go to the doctor's, even though I consume 100+ grams on a daily basis. Oops.

It's different based on total calories. MFP is set for 15%.

The 25 grams is ONLY added sugar (not fruit or dairy or veggies) so is not comparable. I can easily have about 45 grams (the sugar limit for someone at 1200, although I have a much higher limit) from just fruit and veggies and dairy in a day, and I usually have no more than 1-2 servings of fruit and a serving of dairy, so a lot of that is veggies).

So no, for total sugar from all sources I don't think it's high.

I try to keep mine under 50 grams a day and 90% of that is from fruit. I had a great April for sugar or lack there of!!
