My sympathies, I have it in my feet and hands which can complicate exercising. Check with your doctor about swimming. It is low impact and the water helps support your body weight while exercising.

I also have osteoarthritis, and I had horrible joint pain. My doctor said it was unusual to have joint pain with osteoarthritis and gave me a pamphlet on Tylenol. A year later I was having another bout of joint pain and someone suggested a book to me. The Plan by Lyn Genet Recitas. It is an elimination diet. Through the diet I have learned to control my inflammation and avoid the foods that caused the joint pain, namely nuts, sesame seed and some legumes. Disclaimer: I do have a ragweed allergy that also causes some joint pain and YMMV.

I do highly recommend the plan, http://lyngenet.com/.
