Was wonder if I should rely on something other than the automated MFP recommended calories to determine how many calories I day I need to lose??

You can use a TDEE calculator like Scooby's Workshop as well (though you have to rerun it every so often when your weight has changed).0

The best way is to pick a number, any number. Eat that way for a few weeks. Track your weight. If you lose too fast, add a couple of hundred calories and repeat the process. If you lose to slow, drop a couple of hundred calories and repeat.

Thanks all! My main concern was pre-tracking I was not getting enough calories so I would like to have a basis to go by.
