Chewing tobacco to be banned at ballparks in San Francisco

There may be some that dislike the Bay Area approaches, but along with being one of the first cities to ban smoking in public areas (a great move overall for the country), mayor Ed Lee has now banned chewing tobacco at all ballparks in San Francisco including AT&T. A great move IMO. Who cares if it doesn't decline use overall? It's just a much better experience not having to deal with it at a live game.

I've never smoked in my life, but policies for an overcrowded urban area that is strapped for resources are hardly universally applicable across every county in the US.

I don't see how protecting people from cigarette smoke doesn't logically lead to not wanting to be around drunk or high people and so on.

How exactly are you having to deal with it? Were people spitting on others?

Maybe the professional politicians can garner more votes and power if they just ban dying????????????? More wasted resources on non-issues sold by power brokers to people addicted to buying security at the expense of liberty.

Been to many games where people just left nasty cups of "chaw" lying around. That's not the same as left over beers, popcorn or hot dogs either.

Good move, San Fran. Hopefully this won't be the last park/city that does this.

Anyone else think this could be a problem for teams that ban it when they are trying to trade/pick up free agents/sign?

Accommodation for the many trumps the "liberty" of the few. That's how money is made. Oh and how politics are ran. Personally, I'm cool with this like I was about the smoking ban. And I was still smoking at the time the ban was instituted. It help me quit.

We had a guy come into our office using chewing tobacco and spit into the trash can. Blew my mind that someone would be so disgusting. It may not be as invasive as smoking, but it still stinks.

Money is more important. Part of the reason lots of free agents double think about joining a California pro team is the TAXES. Not being able to chew? Probably not so much.

Man, I don't know. I would like to believe you, but dipping/chewing is a pretty strong habit. I would think that if other teams/cities did the same, and say we got to a 50/50 split of teams that do/don't allow, there could be some teams who would be at a disadvantage on picking up players. Baseball is very superstitious and dipping revolves a lot around some players superstitions. Just a thought. I still think they should ban it, but across the board would be better in my opinion.

Is chaw in the bleachers really that big of a problem in San Fran? I've not even noticed it being much of a big thing at Astros games here in Houston.

Oh I don't doubt the actual addiction to it is there. But there are smokers in the league too and they don't smoke during a game.
As for superstitions, I'll bet they'll make a new one if they had too.

I am for any smoking/chew ban in certain areas, which should include any area in where children are present. Everyone was up in arms when the restaurant smoking ban was up for discussion, saying they would lose business (wah wah wah) and the like. Business actually INCREASED due to the ban!

Hmmmm... I am not sure how I feel about this one... I guess on one hand it is pretty gross, but on the other, it doesn't hurt anyone but the person chewing... So if they want to harm themselves then I would say that should be their choice. As long as they aren't spitting in the isles, I don't really care.

Smoking bans I supported wholehearted, because having a non-smoking section in a restaurant is like having a non-peeing section in a swimming pool.
Chaw/dipping/spitting doesn't have the same second-hand implications. Although I don't like to see it, it doesn't affect me as much. Perhaps some restrictions (heavy fine for spit on ground/grass, etc.) and it's a lot better when someone spits in an opaque container (e.g. beer can) rather than clear cup/bottle.
But an all-out ban, I'm on the fence about that one. I'm sure it was a political calculation (e.g. # of people affected < amount that affect my re-election bid).

If we're looking at statistics, chewing tobacco is on the decline in the MLB. I don't think this is a bad step since it's really only affecting a minority of players and fans who do chew. The reality is, it's not a whole day. It's just when you're in the parks or playing fields and stands.

I've never chewed. Don't particularly enjoy watching others chew and spit. Their choice. Never smoked cigarettes. Only cigars. Not going to be intimidated to stop. I restrict my cigar smoking to gatherings with other bikers and cigar smokers. Or at my own BBQ or while out walking.

I find it interesting that we are trying to stop smoking cigarettes and cigars while simultaneously fighting to legalize marijuana. Second hand smoke is second hand smoke. At least cigars and cigarettes don't impair a person's judgment like marijuana. Not that it matters with all the vehicle exhaust nowadays.

Now all of CA is looking at the ban at all MLB parks in the state. What I didn't already know is that chewing tobacco use is already banned in all of the minor leagues.
