Does anyone here use the device for swimming laps? Specs say its waterproof to 5 meters but the most info and reviews I'm seeing are all skewed to runners.

I just joined a gym with a pool and plan on doing laps, looking for an HRM that will aid me in judging my heart rate and calorie burn.

The wireless protocol between the strap and the band doesn't work in water.

It doesn't count laps and the HRM doesn't work in water.

I can also confirm that the HRM signal does not reach the foreunner under water and that it is waterproof! I wear the forerunner to log the time and then manually add the laps in Garmin Connect, which then calculates the number of calories burnt. It does not however give any information about the heart for the duration of the time you are in the water.

Oh darn well thanks for saving me $170! I think I'll email Garmin and ask, just to see how they reply. <insert evil grin>.

Anyone know of a band that does measure heart rate in water? I hate to guess.

Some Polar systems track in water (gymlink protocol) ... the new Suunto Ambit 3 stores the HR data on the strap then syncs it with the watch (costly device) ... Wahoo Tickr X can store HR data on the strap an sync afterwards.

ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy signals to not travel through water.

I just shot off a question to wahoo. Their device says waterproof to 5 ft. I'm not exactly a high intensity swimmer. Was hoping to find a wrist one though. Polars site has lots of ifs ands and buts about it, but I didn't have time to read in depth.
