Activity Level

When I started my profile on MFP, I set it to sendentary because I do have a desk job. It seems as though I'm starting to earn my calories back by 10am from just getting up and walking around, etc. So that leads me to wonder is if my activity level should be higher?

    Most people put sedentary. It is also true that people burn calories walking around during the day as well. It usually doesn't amount to a whole heck of a lot, especially if you really are a desk jockey. I would say, try it out for a week or two. If the results are good, keep it. If not, the goals can always be adjusted.

    Thanks! On a normal day at the office I earn about 250 back. I'll try to eat only half of them back so it's nothing life shattering but it's something. Or I won't eat any back for a few days to save up for the weekend.

    I don't ususally count calories burned from normal daily activities such as getting and walking around the office. I would leave it where it is and only count calories from actual exercise. I'm a nurse so I have mine set at "lightly active".

    2) 5000-7499 steps.d (low active);
    3) 7500-9999 steps.d (somewhat active);
    4) > or =10,000-12,499 steps.d (active); and
    5) > or =12,500 steps.d (highly active)

    Here is a good chart to follow.

    I average about 8k during the week pre exercise so I do have mine set to lightly active. Desk job...but I walk around the office a lot to get water, bathroom, meetings, breaks and never mind what I do at home...then I exercise.

    Keep in mind tho I do not get a calorie adjustment from my tracker until I hit at least 10k...if I set my level to Sedentary I would get it sooner.

    Oh...I usually walk around 10,000 steps at work and when I walk home from work that is another 5000 steps. So I should probably not be at sedentary.

    Always estimate low when it comes to exercise.

    If you're hovering on the edge between sedentary and low-active ... go with sedentary.

    If you start losing a lot of weight, then you might want to up it a little bit.
