What exercises overlap and should i avoid them?

Is there any reason to do exercises that seem to overlap (such as pullups and a lat pull-down machine, or push-ups and bench press) or is there enough difference that i should do them both anyway? I just got a gym membership and i'm trying to figure out what i want out of a routine and if there's benefit to doing fairly similar motions and groups of muscles or if that would just lead to overuse and possible injury of those areas. I know a lot of the machines seem to highlight which muscle groups get worked by each exercise but if anyone could give me some help as to what would overlap and be unnecessary i would greatly appreciate it.

OP if you've just started weight training, maybe it's a good idea to look into SL 5x5?0
