Recently I have started to make changes to my life. Joined gym, just treadmill so far 15-25 minutes per day and cutting back processed sugars. Trying to figure out exactly how much I should eat for my macros and calories. All my doctor says is focus on getting healthy. Okay doing that but want to lose weight too which is hard but possible. Also realized that I eat way too little but with changing diet, not sure what to eat, thinking of Sugar Busters book for suggestions or how often. Please feel free to ask questions.

I just started looking into this for myself today, its all dependent on your goals really but for me since my body doesnt process carbs well Im doing a lower carb higher protein setting. So my journal entries will look like this
50-100g Carbs
170g - Protein
25g - Sugar
2000mg - Sodium
40g Fat
25g Fiber
I am interested to see what everyone else sets there macros to0 -

Hi Gizziemoto, I just signed up at MFP, but I've been, unfortunately, struggling with my weight for years so I have learned a lot about different eating and exercise beliefs and about my own body.
My own body is happiest when it has a moderate amount of carbs and starches, a moderate amount of protein, and quite a bit of fat keeps me satiated and my hormones balanced. I do not do well with much sugar. So I based my chosen macro goals for this site on that information. I didn't eat much yesterday, but I also felt like the recommended calories were a bit lower than I would normally want to eat consistently. Your body may react very differently than mine.
I haven't read SugarBusters, but I know it was very popular. I am a huge fan of avoiding eating too much sugar, but I don't get too worked up over the sugar in say, vegetables. Too much sugary fruit isn't good for me. And I can't handle most commercial sweets, but the occasional homemade treat doesn't seem to do much harm.
So, all that said, I think your doctor is right that the first focus should be on getting healthy. And it sounds like you're doing that by starting an exercise plan and tracking your eating. As for your macros, try a few different things. You could start with the conventional government advice of 20-30% fat, 10-35% protein and the rest carbs. Give it a week or two and see how you feel and if you are losing weight. Then adjust accordingly.
Anyway, it sounds like you're off to a fantastic start and taking this seriously.0 -
Thank you both. Will try the calculator. I have not been able to eat fruit or veggies for over 5 years without severe stomach pains. Started a new probiotic last year and in the last week have been able to have an apple and a salad with only minor discomfort. It is a start!0

what do you mean your body doesn't process carbs?Gizziemoto wrote: »Recently I have started to make changes to my life. For you OP put your stats into MFP with a reasonable amount of weekly weight loss and it will set that for you. Log your exercise and eat back some of those calories burned (as MFP can over estimate)
Keep in mind macros aren't for weight loss they are for health.
Currently mine are set at 45/25/35..this is based on 0.8 grams of protein for every pound I weigh...it's my lower limit. My fats are set to where I am most comfortable and what was left is carbs.
Eating "way too little" does not stop you from losing weight...eating too much does.0
