Low carb and vegetarian diet

Hi, I am a vegetarian and trying to loose weight with low carb diet. Any food suggestions?

    ummmmm if you are eating primarily vegetables they all contain carbs, so I don't know how this is even possible...

    They do, but it's the best thing I can think of for a vegetarian. I was mostly trying to list foods that have something besides pure carbs.

    I honestly don't know of things that are completely carb free that aren't meat, fish, or dairy(Cottage Cheeze, Whey Protein, butter)

    I mostly want an answer to the low carb question.

    Now, to actually be helpful, I tried vegetarian low carb for a bit when I thought I had an ulcer. I mainly ate veggie casserole dishes with cheeses, veggie soups like broccoli or kale, and for protein I ate tofu and tofurkey. If you're on reddit, go to the subreddit called vegetarianketo. They have loads of good recipes there to try. Good luck and don't let the naysayers get to you.

    Does your diet have to be that restrictive?

    Being one or the other is totally do-able, being both vegetarian and low carb is an incredibly difficult and restrictive way to lose weight. If you're fine with that, all the more power to you, but there are certainly easier ways to drop the pounds.

    Low carb leaves you with protein and fat. Find vegetarian options higher in protein and fat.

    It sounds like a ridiculous and miserable way to live. And I say this as someone who really enjoys his vegetables.

    Ok, but in a typical "low carb" diet, you get less than 25% of you caloric intake from carbs. While I agree that you can be a vegetarian and get less carbs(less than 50% of your intake), I don't think a low carb diet is sustainable since your calories would have to come mostly from dairy sources, tofu, or eggs if she can eat them.

    Unless she has a really good reason for needing to go low carb, her dietary venn diagram is much smaller than it really needs to be.

    They do, but not a lot and about half is usually fibre. The MFP entry for mixed nuts is 433 calories, with 12g of carbohydrate, 6 of which is fibre, so 6*4/433= 5.5% calories from carbs. Nuts are mostly fat.

    There really aren't any non-animal sources I can think of with zero carbs (except for protein isolate supplements, of course)

    I use trader Joe tempeh and it has 16 g of carbohydrate but 9 g or fibre, so only 7 g digestible carbs for a 240 calorie serving with 20 grams of carbs.

    Define "low carb"? To me that means between 20 and 40 grams of carbs each day. On a plant-based diet that's going to be pretty tough. The poster above who is eating 80 grams per day on a vegetarian diet (including dairy) would disagree, especially since 80 grams is working for her. :smile:

    You may also need to define "vegetarian" since I've seen different variations either including or excluding dairy, etc.

    I ate low carb high fat for 6 months as a vegetarian. I ended up eating meat, but I do think eating low carb high fat as a lacto-ovo vegetarian is possible and can be tasty and healthy. I like lots of different ethnic foods, so I ate thai curries with lower carb vegetables, saag paneer, paneer butter masala, eggplant curry with no potatoes, paneer capsicum. When I went for barbecues, I cooked halloumi cheese and lots of grilled veggies marinated in an oily dressing. I ate lots of salads with dressing. Chili with black soybeans (http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/lowcarb-black-soybeans.html) is also good. Breakfast was mostly eggs or smoothies with full-fat coconut milk and lower carb berries, like frozen raspberries. I also admit I ate lots of cheesecake made with sweetener. Oh, and "not potato" dishes made with cauliflower - "potato" salad, mashed "potatoes", etc. I make the occasional pizza - I like this crust http://eatfatlosefatblog.com/low-carb-holy-grail-almond-flour-pizza-crust/ with garlic butter, spinach, and goat cheese.

    Anyway, I suggest thinking of foods you eat now and foods that you like and googling the recipe name or description with "low carb". You might find that there are alternatives that you haven't thought of.

    Obviously, meat subs like tofurky sausages aren't carb-free like meat is, but if you read labels carefully, you can definitely find ones that fit into your plan.

    You can lower your carbs by cutting out bread, cereal, pasta, rice, quiona.
    Get protein from beans, lentils, tofu, and nuts (almonds and macadamias are relatively low carb compared to other nuts. :)
    This will not be "low carb" in the traditional sense.
    Remember to eat fats and oils.
