I've started walking up the stairs in my building instead of using the elevator, which for me is intense cardio near the end.
Three different days, I've had a coughing fit after I finished lasting at least ten minutes. It felt like I had a tickle in my throat and my body was coughing to get rid of it, even though there wasn't anything physically there. The last time was pretty bad, I had a sensation that I was gagging, like I was going to throw up.
This doesn't happen every time, but since after three times I feel like it's not a coincidence. Any idea what might have caused this? Maybe I didn't drink enough water beforehand?

Are you focus on your breathing at all since you said this was a bit challenging for you? If you are focusing on your breathing and assuring that you are swallowing to clear the air and saliva from your mouth and throat..
I would say that if you would pace your self, watch the breathing and swallow normally this may help. Other than that if it seems serious you should see a doctor..0 -
Lots of things can come into play here ex smoker or ex smoker under 5 years, dry mouth try taking a bottle of water with you as the air in stairways can be very dry and stale as there is little air change/movement.0

You might want to get checked for Exercise Induced Asthma.0

Do you have allergies? Maybe it's causing a bit of mucous or post nasal drip?
It sounds like me when my exercise induced asthma kicks in, which is always worst during allergy season, but if you've never had it happen before this week, it's probably not asthma.0 -

Me too.
And it seems to go through cycles where, for a while, I'm OK ... and then for a few weeks or months, I'm not.
I think sometimes it depends on things like the weather, my fitness level, whether I've warmed up before the activity, etc.

Definitely sounds like asthma. My nephew was like that after playing hockey until he was diagnosed. The cold makes it worse. No wheezing, just coughing.0
