Vacation to Washington DC

So my hubby and I are going to DC for a four day weekend this month. I'm a bit nervous about this. I'm not a big binge eater or anything, but I do know that my biggest gains always come from eating out too often for too long. Any tips on keeping it in check without ruining our trip by trying to plan every meal? I want to have fun but I'd rather not come home heavier after all my hard work.

Walk around a lot. That's what I'm gonna do when I go.

DC is full of healthy choices. You'll see calories listed on every menu. Tons of people there are health fanatics and the local businesses have adapted to that. I think it might be the law there.

Vacations and restaurants are my biggest problems too. But not in DC. Of course, when I go there it's to visit my sister, the nutritionist, so I can always just order whatever she does :)

DC is fabulous because it's a miserable place to drive. You'll probably do so much walking that you'll be able to indulge a bit.

I'd say just enjoy the trip and try to make wise choices when you go out to eat. It's only four days, and it's vacation!

I'm so glad to hear that! We plan to walk a lot and our hotel rents bikes so we will definitely be moving quite a bit. Thanks for the answers! If anyone has any restaurant recommendations, I'm all ears! I've never been and hubby has only been for work.

My highest one day step count came in DC. 32000. There is so much to walk to.

My wife and I like Ted's Bulletin. She swears by the home made pop tarts.

Watch the calories, but the 5 Guys restaurants (started there) and the Old Dominion Brew-House both have really good food.

I walk a lot when I'm there, so don't have much problem with the calorie intake.

We recently moved to a small town near DC so we've only been there a couple of times for limited sightseeing but some of my highest step days have been in DC. You'll walk A LOT - make sure you pack comfy shoes. We haven't actually gone to a restaurant in DC yet - had a big breakfast at home before we left and then grabbed a snack from one of the many food trucks that line the street between the National Mall and the Smithsonian on the weekends.

As was already stated, you're obviously going to be doing a lot of walking around DC. On top of that, there's a good chance that your hotel will have some sort of gym/exercise room you can use while you stay if you feel inclined to do so. The food around here is great though! Every single place I've gone to when I metro into DC has had plenty of healthy options. Just make sure you don't go to a restaurant you can easily go to while at home, you're on vacation, might as well try something new!

Agreed on the advice above. You'd be surprised just how much walking you can get in in a day in a nicely designed city, and how far it will go towards mitigating those calories. I was recently in Seattle. I tried everything, from the pastries at the Russian bakery in the marketplace, to rich seafood chowder to delicious lattes and cappuccinos not made skinny or at Starbucks. But I was walking upwards of 10 miles per day. I returned home same weight I left.
