Here's a newbie help post which includes a link to sexypants (go read it now),
as well as a post about realistic goal setting.
That has links to a couple of calculators, including this one from the Baylor College of Medicine,
which takes into account your height, weight, age, & activity level to tell you how many calories you
need to maintain any weight. Set it at your healthy goal weight (based on BMI) and eat that much
(ignore exercise), or figure out how much you need to maintain your current weight, then subtract
500 from that for a goal of losing 1 lb per week.
It will also tell you how many servings of the various food groups you should be eating.0 -
You could also just log your food for a couple weeks to get an idea of what you're currently
eating, then subtract from that, wait a couple weeks to see if you're losing weight, adjust
from there. As you hit a plateau, subtract 50-100 calories & wait to see that you start losing
again. Don't go under 1200 unless you're very short or your doctor says it's OK.0 -
is 5'2 very short? lol
and thank you for that AWESOME link. i entered my goal weight and it gave me a great idea of what i should have my calorie goal set for!!! i appreciate it!0 -
Agree, set it for a reasonable deficit. Enable negative calorie adjustments and let the apps do the rest.0

If you went to that Baylor link, that is a calculator for young people, ages 2 - 20.
