Is there anyone else out there that deals with chronic neck strains? I really could use some advice as to how you work out around it. I have been to the doctor, I had x rays done. I have visited many Chiro's through the years. I get headaches sometimes that just derail my ability to work out much. I take awhile off and then it happens again after I work out for awhile. It makes it really hard to try and push more weight. Anyway, anybody else got anything they can say to help me work through this?

How's your form? What lifts are you doing? I had that problem until, then had my wife correct my lifting form. It went away completely.

Keep your neck neutral when you're lifting

Happens to me. I just take much more time warming up. The worst for me used to be pull-ups. I would always strain some kind of a ligament, or something, in my neck. Now, I do short sets. I start with two. I go to three. Then four. etc. Same with lifts. I do a full set with half my working weight. Then add twenty pounds, and do a full set. Then forty pounds, etc., until I am at my working weight, and then I do my normal number of sets.
    Seems to work.
    Easy does it.
Eventually -- I think -- as you are not constantly reinjuring whatever it is that gets strained, it gets better and becomes much less of a problem.
    Good luck

Agreed that proper form is key. If you still have issues, then I'd ask, do you have any previous conditions or injuries? My neck is in bad shape so I go at least once a month for a 60 minute deep tissue massage. My therapist spends the first 15 min. on my neck, shoulders and upper back. Full body for the rest of the time. I could not do all my lifting without those massages!

It's not form. this is chronic neck thing from a car accident when i was a teenager. It's just not something that every bothers me other then if push to hard at the gym or sleep wrong on it. i have never had a deep tissue message though. maybe i will look into that.
